Online Homework (ACE Organic at Prentice-Hall)

Dr. Grossman, in collaboration with several UK computer scientists and the publisher Prentice–Hall, has developed a new Web-based organic chemistry homework program called ACE Organic. This program asks you to draw organic structures in response to a question. If your answer is incorrect, you are given some feedback, but you are not told the correct answer. You need to keep trying until you get the right answer.

Your performance on the electronic homework problems (percentage of problems answered correctly, excluding the tutorials) will contribute 10% to your overall grade. You will be allowed an infinite number of tries to answer most questions, so there is no reason any person cannot score 100% on the electronic homework. Feel free to ask me for help on any problems. Problems from the electronic homework may make their way onto exams. Last year's students found it most useful to do the ACE problems early and then to focus on the textbook problems closer to exam time.

We will be using the Prentice–Hall installation of ACE (hereafter ACE@PH).  For instructions on gaining access to ACE@PH visit this page.

Traditional (Book) Homework

In addition to the ACE assignments, problems from the book will be assigned, but they won’t be collected or graded. Answers to homework problems are available in the Study Guide/Solutions Manual.  Traditional homework assignments will be posted in the Notes section of the Ace Organic website.

Even though I will not be collecting or grading the traditional homework, you are strongly encouraged to do it. Problems from the book also may make their way onto exams. Also, many types of problems that may appear on exams will not be found in ACE, so you will need to do the textbook problems in addition to the ACE problems. Last year's students found it most useful to do the ACE problems early and then to focus on the textbook problems closer to exam time.
