CHE 450G Attendance Policy
Please Note:
- The only excused absences will be those consistent with the University's Absence Policy (see below). Students will not be given an opportunity to make up laboratory periods missed due to unexcused absences.
- Lecture attendance is mandatory. Students having more than two unexcused lecture absences will have one percentage point deducted from their final grade for each class missed. For example, a student with an 81% final grade (B-) who has four unexcused lecture absences will have his or her final grade reduced to 77% (C).

5.2.4.2 Excused Absences: (US: 11/11/85; 2/9/87)
The following are defined as excused absences:
- Illness of the student or serious illness of a member of thestudent's immediate family. The instructor shall have the right torequest appropriate verification.
- The death of a member of the student's immediate family. Theinstructor shall have the right to request appropriate verification.
- Trips for members of student organizations sponsored by anacademic unit, trips for University classes, and trips forparticipation in intercollegiate athletic events. When feasible, thestudent must notify the instructor prior to the occurrence of suchabsences, but in no case shall such notification occur more than oneweek after the absence. Instructors may request formal notificationfrom appropriate university personnel to document the student'sparticipation in such trips.
- Major Religious Holidays. Students are responsible fornotifying the instructor in writing of anticipated absences due totheir observance of such holidays no later than the last day foradding a class.
- Any other circumstances which the instructor findsreasonable cause for nonattendance. (US: 4/23/90)
Students missing work due to an excused absence bear theresponsibility of informing the instructor about their excused absencewithin one week following the period of the excused absence (exceptwhere prior notification is required), and of making up the missedwork. The instructor shall give the student an opportunity to make upthe work and/or the exams missed due to an excused absence, and shalldo so, if feasible, during the semester in which the absence occurred.[US: 11/10/85 and RC: 11/20/87] If attendance is required or serves as a criterion for a grade ina course, and if a student has excused absences in excess of one-fifthof the class contact hours for that course, a student shall have theright to petition for a "W", and the faculty member may require thestudent to petition for a "W" or take an "I" in the course. * If a student has an excused absence on a day when a quiz isgiven, the instructor may not deny permission for a makeup exam andsimply calculate the student's grade on the basis of the remainingrequirements. (RC: 8/20/87)
5.2.4.4 Unsatisfactory Scholarship and Attendance
A student who is doing unsatisfactory work or who is irregular inattendance (when required - see Section V., 5.2.4.1) in any course shallbe reported to the dean of the college in which the student isregistered. The student shall be under the special supervision ofhis/her dean. If, after a suitable length of time, it becomes apparentthat no improvement is being made, the dean may drop the student fromthe course, reporting the action to the Registrar and to theinstructor.
