Course Description: Applications of radionuclides in chemistry are discussed with emphasis on the principles of radioactive decay, interactions of radiation with matter, tracers, activation analysis and other nuclear methods of analysis, hot atom chemistry, nuclear dating methods and the nucleosynthesis of the elements. CHE 520 is the introductory course in a sequence which includes a laboratory course, CHE 521 (1-2 credits, spring term), an advanced course in nuclear chemistry, CHE 616 (3 credits, offered in alternate years), and a topics course in nuclear spectroscopic methods, CHE 746 (3 credits, offered on a three-year cycle).
