Chem 535 Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Problem Assignment TWO
This is assignment is worth 75 pts. 15% of your grade. You may choose one partner with whom to work or you can work alone.

DATE of ISSUE: Thursday, March 26, 2007

DATE DUE: Tuesday, April 03, 2007.

· Type your Assignment on a computer; draw your molecular structures with a computer drawing program. If you need help or if you need programs to do this, see me. Email your assignment to me.

· List and draw exact structures and reactions of the closest precedent to your proposed synthetic operations for every step you reference. I will take off points for steps for which there is no literature reference. Do not cite text books! Do not cite Wikipedia or other web resident knowledge. You may use this information, but you will have to look up the original literature.

· Document your work by drawing structures and explaining the closest precedent to your proposed work (not the whole paper/ reference). Don't make it difficult for the grader to conclude that someone can do the synthesis.

{25 pts} Show a retrosynthetic analysis of the molecule and discuss why the bonds you chose to break were strategic.
{50 pts.} Show your best enantiospecific route to the target molecule above. Here is the place to put a lot of documentation. If you are trying to do this assignment without reading and considering the assigned material, you are probably doubling your effort and time. Key reactions to consider might be :

  • Robinson annulation?
  • Sharpless epoxidation?
  • Sharpless dihydroxylation?
  • nucleophilic opening of epoxide?
