Using the Library to Effective Search
the Chemical Lecture
Purpose: to advance your ability to use chemical
knowledge
to communicate, to publish and to do assignments in CHE535. If you have
any problems with anything below. Let me know. You can even bring your
laptop to my office. I am willing to help at this level if you need it.

Chemical Structure
Drawing Program
See me if you can't draw structures on a
computer
and
include them in a text document.
A very good, free utility is Isis Draw.
Local Download
---------------------------------------
Fakes your presence at UK, entirely legal.
You can be at home and use databases that demand that you
are at the University. If you have a problem downloading or installing
this utility; let me know I can likely help.
How to get.

or Download it locally from
the CHE535 site. Select save target as or something like that
from your browser.
Efficient inclusion of references in a text
document. PC and Mac. After you learn to use this utility, you will
feel challenged in its absence.

or Download Scifinder
locally from the CHE535 site. Select save target as or something
like that from your browser.
The site.prf file needs to be present in the same
directory in which you have the executable file. The installation
process will put the executable file in a particular directory.
An example of how one would use SciFinder in a
synthetic problem.

Let's say that you had to develop a paper synthesis of the following
molecule where n=0 and n=1.

Let's list the elements of molecular complexity in the
structure above so we can direct our synthetic effort.
Draw substructures. Start with an
enantiospecific structure of the 1,3-diamino-2-cyclpentanol.
We found that structures with absolute stereochemistry related to the five ring diamino alcohol were extremely rare, whereas those related to the six-ring diamino alcohol were extremely common.
