Internet Searching Sites
A variety of search engines are listed below which permit you to do keyword searches on topics of your choice (examples: "heterocycle", "Diels Alder", "emus", "gamma ray spectroscopy" etc.). Contrary to what you might think, these sites do not necessarily contain the same information or index info in the same way:
- Alta Vista attempts to index all of the pages on the entire web.
- Excite claims to have twice the power, has site reviews and news headlines updated every 30 minutes.
- Hotbot also claims to have more URL's.
- Lycos has a very large database of URLs.
- Webcrawler has the usual features. In addition, it has Special features that let you pull up 10 random URL's, see the top 25 sites on the Internet, numeric facts about the www and more.
- Yahoo is one of the oldest and most well-established search engines out there.
- The University of Kentucky maintains a comprehensive list of dozens of other search services.
