We are currently interested in developing a series of networks and clusters using synthetic methodology known as "a building block approach". A building block approach utilizes a series of robust molecular precursors that self-assemble with their structures intact, into well-defined structural archetypes. Through substitution of the building blocks employed, a series of structurally related clusters and networks can be engineered that exhibit a variety of tunable properties such as dramatic color and magnetism changes upon the application of various stimuli. Once prepared, these solids are characterized via polynuclear NMR, infrared, UV-vis, SQUID susceptibility, X-ray and neutron diffraction, and photophysical techniques to determine structure-property relationships present in these materials.

If you should have any questions, are interested in collaborative studies, or a postdoctoral position please contact Stephen M. Holmes at smholm2@uky.edu
